A 40-year-old individual posing as a doctor, Charlotte Asiedu, has been found guilty by the Assin Fosu Magistrate Court of engaging in illegal activities and has been fined GHC 4,800.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Ms. Asiedu, who is a hairdresser, had administered a harmful concoction to a 17-year-old student in an attempt to terminate her 17-week pregnancy. Unfortunately, the concoction caused the victim to experience severe stomach pain, resulting in her hospitalization.
The court also convicted Ms. Asiedu’s accomplice, a 21-year-old boyfriend of the pregnant girl, for aiding and abetting the crime. He was also fined GHC 4,800.
Here are the details of the case:
In front of Justice Abdul Majid Iliasu, the defendants pleaded guilty, leading to their conviction based on their own admission of guilt.
According to Inspector Matilda Osaah Buabeng, who led the prosecution, the victim’s mother, Victoria Arthur, filed a complaint with the Assin Fosu police after discovering that her daughter’s hospitalization was a result of consuming a concoction provided by Ms. Asiedu to terminate the pregnancy.
Inspector Buabeng further explained that it was the victim’s boyfriend who sought out Ms. Asiedu’s services, paying GHC 200 to have the pregnancy terminated. Due to the severity of the victim’s reaction to the concoction, she had to be urgently taken to St. Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu for medical attention.
The victim is currently still receiving medical attention.
