Renowned Ghanaian gospel artist Mama Esther, born Esther Adwoa Pokua Badau, has opened up about her early struggles in music while celebrating a major milestone in her career.
Speaking on Oyerepa Entertainment Review with Francisca Ntsiful, the gospel icon revealed how she almost gave up on her dream due to the powerful influence of fellow gospel singer Esther Smith.
Recalling her first time in the studio, Mama Esther admitted she was extremely nervous. “I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to sing like her,” she said. “I even told the person taking me to the studio not to put me in trouble because my voice was nothing like Esther Smith’s. But he reassured me, saying effects had been added to her voice, so I shouldn’t worry.”
She went on to reveal that, at the time, she had no experience as a backing vocalist, had never been in a music band, and didn’t even have a musician friend. This left her anxious and doubting herself. However, she eventually overcame her fears, becoming one of Ghana’s most beloved gospel singers.
“At that time, I had never been a backing vocalist, never joined a music band, and didn’t even have a musician friend. That made me even more anxious, and I couldn’t stop overthinking.”
