Dr. Jackson Adiyiah Nyantakyi, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, has disclosed that the EPA has formally requested authorization from Parliament to enforce penalties on drivers whose vehicles emit harmful emissions.
“We have written to Parliament to grant us the authority to arrest and fine drivers on the spot when they are found guilty,” Dr. Jackson asserted in an interview with Akua Asiedua on Oyerepa Breakfast Time.
Meanwhile, Parliament has passed the Emissions Levy Bill, 2023, as part of efforts to reduce Ghana’s carbon dioxide emissions and help raise some domestic revenue for the government.
The bill is aimed at promoting the use of eco-friendly technologies and green energy, improving environmental management, and controlling general levels of air and water pollution.
However, the government faced a massive backlash from the public, including its own party members, leading to the suspension of the implementation of the bill.
