All too soon, the much anticipated 2024 general election has come to an end after the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, on December 9, 2024, declared the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama as President-Elect.

During the election, some entertainment personalities from the two major political parties, the NPP and NDC, contested for parliamentary seats in some constituencies.

Actor-turned-politician John Setor Dumelo contested on the ticket of the NDC and won a landslide victory over Lydia Seyram Alhassan at the Ayawaso West Wuogon.

Dumelo’s victory sees him unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, paying the way for him to represent the constituency in the 9th Parliament.

This marks the MP-elect’s second time contesting for the seat in the constituency after going on a defeated battle with Lydia Seyram Alhassan in 2020.

In the final results, John Dumelo garnered 47,560 votes, while Lydia Alhassan secured 39,214 votes. The actor’s win is seen as a major political shift in Ayawaso West, which is considered to be a stronghold of the NPP.

Kwame A Plus: Gomoa Central

Musician-turned-politician, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, contested for the Gomoa Central Parliamentary seat in the Central Region.

A- Plus beat the New Patriotic Party’s incumbent MP, Nana Eyiah Quansah by 2,000 votes.

The MP-Elect who contested as an independent candidate polled a total of 14,277 votes against Nana Eyiah Quansah’s 11,637 votes.

While other parliamentary candidates together polled a total of 10,112 votes.

Baba Sadiq: Okaikwei Central

Music entrepreneur-turned-politician Baba Sadiq contested on the ticket of the NDC, against the incumbent MP, Patrick Boamah.

The 2024 election is the first the music entrepreneur has contested for the parliamentary seat in the Okaikwei Central constituency.

In the final results, Baba Sadiq pulled a total of 15,383 votes while NPP’s Patrick Boamah had 14,949 votes. The results were announced from the collation of results from 78% of polling stations in the constituency.
