The National Peace Council remains confident that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will sign the peace pact ahead of the December polls, despite the party’s reservations.
The NDC has outlined specific conditions that it insists must be met before it considers signing the peace pact. The party’s National Chairman, Asiedu Nketia, has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of previous peace pacts, arguing that they have not yielded the desired results.
However, speaking to journalists in Accra, the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, expressed optimism that the NDC will eventually commit to signing the pact.
“The NDC has not said categorically that they won’t sign. They have given out some grievances and we will meet with them and we will talk about those things and then we will resolve them.
“I don’t think that it is something that we should split our heads over. Our doors are always open. We work with the parties, we talk with them. And so we listen to them, we find a way to talk and find solutions to some of these grievances.
“The ones that are within our capacity, we will do them. Some of them are not within our control and there is nothing that the Peace Council itself can handle. We hope that they will sign.”
