ECG cuts power to Kejetia market over GH¢600,000 debt

The Electricity Company of Ghana has disconnected the Kumasi Kejetia Market from the National Grid due to a debt of over 6 million Ghana cedis.

The power has been out at the market for nearly a week, significantly impacting trading activities in the bustling commercial hub.

Tailors, cold store operators, and vendors of perishable goods have been hit the hardest since the lights went out on Wednesday, April 10, 2024.

In an attempt to provide an alternative power source, a generator was brought in to the facility a few days after the blackout. However, this solution was not sustainable as traders were concerned about the additional cost of fuel being passed on to them.

As a result, traders are now relying on flashlights to carry out their activities at night, further highlighting the challenges faced by businesses at the Kumasi Kejetia Market.
