Barring any last-minute changes, the Electoral Commission (EC) is set to begin printing ballot papers today, August 20, 2025, for the upcoming parliamentary by-election in Akwatia.
The announcement followed a high-level meeting convened on Tuesday by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, with representatives of political parties to discuss security and preventive measures ahead of the polls.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia, on July 7, 2025. His passing created a vacancy in Parliament, paving the way for the September 2 by-election.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the IGP assured political parties of the Police Service’s preparedness to maintain peace and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
The by-election will be a straight contest between the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo, both of whom have expressed confidence about their chances.
