A mentally ill patient Nayo Annor who is in his twenties has allegedly killed his aged visually impaired Uncle Kwaku Emmanuel at Nuaso a suburb of Lower Manya Krobo in the Eastern region.
The incident occured Sunday, August 13, 2023.
The victim was eating when the suspect violently attacked him with a machete and inflicted wounds to his neck and other parts of the body, killing him instantly.
The suspect was saved from being lynched by some angry residents who rushed to the scene
He was handed over to the Police for further investigation.
Body of the deceased has been deposited at Atua government hospital morgue.
Residents of Lower Manya Krobo had been complaining over increasing number of mentally ill persons on the streets for sometime now.
Chief of Tesanya-Nuaso, Nene Kwesi Afro Titriku described as “dangerous to society,” .
“Everyone who is detected to be mentally unstable should be sent to the mental hospital for peace to prevail in the community and the entire country,” he advised.
Meanwhile, residents of Akyem Oda in Birim Central municipality of Eastern region are similarly alarmed by increasing number of mentally ill persons in the town.
The residents claim most of these mentally ill persons are strangers with no family in Akyem Oda therefore believe some families in cities intentionally abandon them in Oda township.
Some commercial drivers who work at dawn in Akyem Oda, alleged that they have been seeing some container vehicles that comes to the town and stops at vantage points to abandon these mentally deranged persons in the town.
Therefore called on the municipal authorities, chiefs, and government to as a matter of urgency mount surveillance to halt the phenomenon .
According to them ,the increasing population of mentally ill persons some of whom are very aggressive ,threatens safety and security of populace particularly school children, women and the aged.
The Krontihene of Akyem Kotoku traditional area; Obrempong Gyamfi Saforokyere II also shared the sentiments of the residents.
He called for investigation into the situation for an immediate action.
Meanwhile the Municipal chief Executive for Birim Central Municipal, Hon. Victoria Adu said District Security Council have taken notice of the situation and assessed the dangers particularly when the mentally ill persons are strangers.
She said action will son be taken.
