The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Mr Alfred Obeng-Boateng is calling on Ghanaians to engage in more Mobile Money transactions for government to get money.
According to him, the government would not have gone to IMF for a bailout if Ghanaians had done more Mobile Money (MOMO) to earn enough money through e-levy.
The finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta announced the government’s intention to introduce an electronic transaction levy (e-levy) of 1.75% in the 2022 budget. But it was reduced to 1.5% following protests from various stakeholders.
After some months of the implementation of the E-levy, the government has gone to IMF for a bailout, claiming it could not generate enough revenue as targeted.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, the legislator stated the government targeted enough revenue from the E-levy.
“Government taught it could generate enough revenue from the e-levy, that would have helped us in some way. But Ghanaians have failed us. They are not participating in the Momo transaction….. We’ve to do more momo for government to get enough money.” He said.
He further accused the opposition NDC of polluting the minds of Ghanaians against the E-levy.
“The minority polluted the atmosphere to extent that the ordinary Ghanaians had the perception that government will collect the e-levy and chop….so Ghanaians got it wrong.”
He suggested that there will be a need for government to educate Ghanaians on the importance of taxation.
