Driver charged over fatal pragia accident granted GH¢100,000 bail

The Akropong District Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District, presided over by His Worship Emmanuel Wiafe Adu, has granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties to Godfred Mensah.

Mensah has been charged with careless and inconsiderate driving, resulting in the death of a tricycle (Pragia) rider.

The court ordered that the two sureties must be residents within or near the court’s jurisdiction and must be justified.

The bail was granted after counsel for the accused prayed the court for more time, explaining that the case docket had been forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for advice.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Richard Amissah of the Ashanti Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), did not oppose the request. The case has been adjourned to September 3, 2026.

In a related development, the court also convicted and fined four other drivers for various traffic offences.

One of them, Kwabena Owusu, was arrested on July 28 for unlawful parking, careless driving and assaulting a police officer. He pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined GH¢3,360. He was also placed on a six-month bond of good behaviour.

Another driver, Yaw Asuako, who was arrested on the same day, pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving, overspeeding and driving without a valid licence. He was fined GH¢2,520 and placed on a six-month bond of good behaviour. In default of payment, he will serve a two-week prison sentence.

Meanwhile, a Toyota Voxy driver identified as Daniel Aboagye was also arraigned before the court. According to the prosecution, he fled after police officers attempted to stop him at Kejetia but was arrested two days later following a police operation.

He was charged with dangerous driving, wrongful parking and causing harm to other road users.

The court also charged him with perjury after it emerged during proceedings that he did not possess a valid driver’s licence at the time of his arrest.

Daniel Aboagye has been remanded into police custody for five days and is expected to reappear before the court on Monday.
