Former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly denounced the violent incidents that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency.
In an interview granted on July 11, 2025, Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over the reported voter intimidation, clashes, and arrests that occurred during the rerun exercise, describing the scenes as a serious setback to Ghana’s democratic progress.
“The violence we are witnessing is deeply disappointing. It undermines the very foundation of our democracy and raises questions about the NDC’s commitment to peace and due process,” he said, referencing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won the 2024 general elections.
The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a rerun in 19 polling stations following irregularities and disputed results from the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections. But what was expected to be a corrective democratic exercise was marred by chaos, including the presence of unauthorized individuals in security-style uniforms.
Dr. Bawumia urged the relevant state institutions to conduct a thorough, swift, and impartial investigation into the incidents, stressing the need for accountability and order.
“I encourage Ghanaians to remain calm and allow the electoral process to conclude peacefully. Our democracy must remain strong, even in the face of provocation and violence,” he added.
