Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to, if possible, declare a state of emergency on flooding in the country.

Dr. Bawumia made the call on Tuesday when he visited flood-hit areas at Kasoa Old Barrier to commiserate with victims of Monday’s downpour.

Addressing the media after touring the area, the 2024 NPP flagbearer urged all Ghanaians to unite to tackle the recurring flood problem.

“Let us come together for Ghana and solve this problem for our country. I want to ask everybody, let’s do this together and let’s provide relief, immediate relief to the people who are affected. People need food, people don’t have clothes, people don’t have mattresses,” he said.

Calls for Immediate Relief Support
Dr. Bawumia appealed to individuals, groups, and organizations to support victims who have been rendered homeless by the floods, particularly in Greater Accra and other parts of the country.

“Let us make sure that we come immediately to their aid. Everybody should do something. Myself, I will try and help in the small way I can with some of these relief items,” he stated.

“But I think that we are a country. Our people, our communities are in need, and we should all chip in to come and help.”

Urges Non-Partisan Approach
The leader of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, also urged the public not to politicize the flood disaster. “We should come together as a country to find a solution to this,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized.

Monday’s heavy rains left several communities in Accra, Kasoa, and other areas flooded, displacing residents and destroying property worth thousands of cedis.
