A Food Technologist at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Mrs Faustina Okyere has advised tomato farmers to stop the habit of harvesting vegetables under the hot sun.
According to her, heat is a major factor which contributes to the rapid decay of tomatoes, hence, harvesting the vegetable in the sunshine will reduce its lifespan and quality.
“I always advise farmers to stop harvesting vegetables under the hot sun. Tomato is a perishable vegetable which does not like heat, hence harvesting it under the hot sun reduces its scheduled lifespan and causes it to decay rapidly. Heat turns out to be the catalyst here”. Mrs Faustina said this on Oyerepa FM’s Akuafo Kyefa hosted by Richmond Frimpong.
She further encouraged farmers and Ghanaians to store the vegetable in cool and hygienic conditions to improve their lifespan.
“Tomatoes are a very sensitive breed and ought to be adequately taken care of to last a bit longer than often experienced. Store in cool conditions”. She concluded.
