The Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has called on management of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) to adopt innovative approaches and fully leverage the vast airport lands and facilities to generate additional revenue.

Madam Affo-Toffey made the remarks on Thursday during an official tour of GACL and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) as part of her familiarisation visits to agencies under the Ministry of Transport.

She emphasised that utilising available airport spaces for commercial ventures would not only increase revenue but also create jobs, supporting the Government’s 24-hour economy and economic reset agenda.

“I am here to encourage you to be more innovative and look beyond just aircraft operations and fully utilise our airport land and facilities for commercial purposes,” she said.

The visit aimed to understand the agencies’ operations, appreciate their work, and identify challenges to help improve performance. Madam Affo-Toffey reiterated the Government’s vision to position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa, with Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as the destination of choice for travellers. She assured continued Ministry support for the expansion and improvement of airport infrastructure nationwide to facilitate trade, tourism, and the efficient movement of people and goods.

During the tour, the Deputy Minister inspected ongoing projects, including the expansion of Terminal Two, runway overlay works, and the construction of a new ultra-modern GACL head office complex.

The Terminal Two redevelopment, scheduled for completion by mid-2027, will handle both domestic and some international flights to ease congestion at Terminal Three. The facility will feature two levels with shops, restaurants, lift access, and a connection to the departure hall, enhancing the passenger experience.

The runway expansion and overlay, which began in July 2025, is also expected to finish by July 2027. Madam Affo-Toffey commended Amandi Construction Limited, the contractor handling the projects, for its diligence and progress, and pledged to conduct periodic follow-up visits to ensure deadlines are met.

She highlighted the Ministry’s emphasis on renewable energy, noting that future airport infrastructure projects would integrate solar energy solutions. She thanked management and staff for their warm reception and expressed her intention to return to witness the completion of the projects.

GACL Managing Director, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, explained that the company was separated from the GCAA in 2007 with a mandate to manage and operate six airports nationwide. Wholly owned by the Government of Ghana, GACL has grown from about 400 staff to over 1,600 employees, with more than 1,000 based in Accra.

Mrs Opare said the new head office complex was necessary as the company had outgrown its existing office nearly two decades after its establishment. She expressed confidence that the completion of the Terminal Two redevelopment and other projects would greatly improve both passenger experience and operational efficiency at the airport.
