Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has attributed the party’s defeat in the recent general elections to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.
Blay made this disclosure on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, shedding light on the factors that led to the NPP’s loss.
According to Blay, the COVID-19 pandemic, which ravaged the world, had a significant impact on Ghana’s economy, leading to widespread hardship and discontent among the population. The pandemic’s effects were further exacerbated by the Russian-Ukraine war, which led to a global economic downturn, skyrocketing inflation, and shortages of essential commodities.
“We’ve gone through some crisis or the other.
The COVID-19 was one of the factors why we lost. The start of the Russian-Ukraine war led to the economic crisis that we have faced. It led to a GDP diving to less than 2%. It led to several crisis that the world was facing that we’re part of. It affected the management and husbandry of the economy.”
“….To the extent that, it impacted our cedi, dollar and that matter the exchange rate and people exploited it and made it looked as if it was a mismanagement.”
The NPP’s defeat consequently has been attributed to various factors, including the party’s handling of the economy, corruption, and perceived arrogance of some government officials.
However, Blay believes that external factors, such as the pandemic and the war, also played a significant role in the party’s loss.
