A 31-year-old man, Issahaku Waris, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for defiling a five-year-old girl in Wa Zongo, in the Upper West Region.
The verdict was delivered by the Wa Circuit Court on Friday, July 18, 2025, following months of legal proceedings. His Lordship Jonathan Avogo presided over the case.
According to police reports, the disturbing incident took place on Thursday, April 24, 2025. Waris was apprehended two days later—on Saturday, April 26—by officers from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
In a statement signed by Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Peter Kwamasa, the Upper West Regional Police Command confirmed the conviction and credited the outcome to diligent investigations and cooperation from the victim’s family.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children from abuse and urged the public to remain vigilant and report such cases promptly.
“The Regional Command remains dedicated to safeguarding the rights and welfare of children, and we encourage the public to report all forms of abuse without delay,” the statement read.
