Former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Afigya Kwabre South, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah—popularly known as COKA—has proposed a change in how the party refers to its grassroots representatives, suggesting that the term “delegates” be replaced with “volunteers.”
In a Facebook post on Friday, May 9 2025, COKA argued that the current terminology no longer reflects the spirit of service that should underpin the party’s grassroots engagement.
According to him, the role of delegates is increasingly being treated as a professional pursuit by some individuals, rather than one of voluntary service and commitment to party ideals.
“In rebuilding our party, one modification I would appreciate is replacing the term ‘delegates’ with ‘volunteers,’ as it is becoming a profession for some people,” he wrote.
COKA’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is undergoing internal reflection and reform following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
The party recently received a report from an investigative committee tasked with examining the reasons behind the loss, with recommendations expected to shape its reorganisation efforts.
As part of its post-election activities, the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is currently leading a nationwide “Thank You” tour.
He is joined by other top party officials in expressing gratitude to supporters while engaging with the party’s grassroots to rebuild trust and momentum ahead of future political contests.
