Two persons have been put before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a Kia Forte from a rental service provider at New Bortianor.

Nana Abeka Anderson, an Information Technology (IT) technician, is said to have conspired with the Gyasihene of Gomoa Fete, Nana Kofi Baah I, to steal the car worth GH¢ 200,000.

According to court documents, Anderson rented the car with forged documents and gave it to Nana Baah I.

The two received GH¢16,000 from a third suspect, Yakubu, who has since gone into hiding with the car.

Anderson and Nana Baah have been jointly charged with conspiracy.

In addition to the charge of conspiracy, Anderson alone has been charged with a substantive charge of stealing and forgery.

The two, who are currently being investigated in connection with other vehicle theft cases, were remanded when they appeared before the court presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah.

Prosecution’s facts

The facts as narrated by the prosecution led by Inspector (Insp.) Abigail Offeibea were that on March 10, 2025, Anderson contacted the complainant, who is engaged in car rental services, to rent the Kia Forte for two days.

According to the prosecution, the accused requested that the vehicle be delivered to his residence at Haatso, Accra.

On March 11 2025, the complainant delivered the car to Anderson at the exact location, where Anderson paid for a two-day rental.

The complainant, the prosecution said, requested a photocopy of Anderson’s Ghana Card and Driving Licence.

Anderson provided identification cards bearing the name Essel Kofi Elvis with his photograph on the ID cards.

“Upon the expiration of the rental period on March 13, 2025, the complainant attempted to contact Anderson multiple times, but his phone was switched off.”

“The complainant checked the vehicle’s tracking device, but unfortunately, it had been disabled by the accused,” Insp. Offeibea told the court.

Complaint

She added that on March 14, 2025, the complainant reported the matter to the police.

During the investigation, the prosecutor said the Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department (RCID) received information that Anderson had been arrested in a related case at the CID Headquarters.

Based on this information, the Accra RCID took custody of Anderson for investigation.

“During interrogation, Anderson admitted to renting the vehicle from the complainant and failing to return it. He named Nana Baah I as his accomplice and stated that he handed the vehicle over to him at Kakraba.

“Nana Baah I was arrested and also admitted that Anderson brought the vehicle to him,” the prosecutor said.

She added that the accused person subsequently gave the car to Yakubu, who is currently at large, adding, “They received GH¢16,000.00 from Yakubu and shared the proceeds”.

The prosecutor said checks from DVLA and National Identification Authority (NIA) revealed the identity cards provided by Anderson in renting the car to be fake.

The accused persons, she said, had failed to assist the police in retrieving the vehicle in this case.
