The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has expressed deep concern over the persistent power challenges and financial woes plaguing Ghana’s energy sector. In a statement issued on June 10, the civil society organization urged the government to adopt robust governance, transparency, and accountability measures to address the crisis.
CFF-Ghana attributed the energy sector’s distress to more than just financial shortfalls, citing mismanagement and corruption as key contributing factors. The organization alleged that a syndicate of political appointees and technocrats exploit the sector for personal gain, and that successive governments have failed to dismantle these entrenched cartels.
The group rejected tariff hikes as a viable long-term solution, arguing that it would impose an unnecessary financial burden on poor households and struggling industries.
CFF-Ghana called on the Energy Minister to Champion comprehensive regulatory reforms, Strengthen procurement oversight, Enhance fiscal discipline to curb corruption, Regulate the fuel coupon scheme and Sanction public officials who abuse state resources
The organization also urged the government to engage with stakeholders on the recently introduced GHC1 fuel levy to promote consensus and public ownership of energy sector reforms.
CFF-Ghana emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, calling on the government to update the public on the prosecution of individuals accused of wrongdoing in the energy sector.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to national development by advocating for people-centered policies and public service delivery.
