Cecilia Johnson, a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a lifelong advocate for women’s empowerment, has died at the age of 79.
Her family confirmed her passing on Monday, September 22, though the cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Johnson played a significant role in Ghana’s democratic evolution. She rose to national prominence as General Secretary of the 31st December Women’s Movement, a powerful organization that advanced women’s rights throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Her work with the movement paved the way for her appointment to high-level government positions, including Minister for Local Government under former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Born in Awua-Domase in the then Brong-Ahafo Region (now Bono Region), Johnson was one of 12 children of Joana Bennett, who was herself revered as a community leader.
