Cabinet is expected to meet today, Thursday, May 14, to deliberate on recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Review Committee.

The special session is expected to be chaired by President John Dramani Mahama and will focus on key proposed reforms to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Government is set to take critical decisions on the recommendations as part of ongoing constitutional review processes aimed at strengthening governance and democratic accountability.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed the development, noting that a draft position paper has already been prepared after extensive consultations and legal review by the Attorney-General and the President’s legal team.

Speaking on Joy News, he said President Mahama had earlier instructed that the committee’s report be thoroughly examined to inform government’s official response to the proposed reforms.

According to him, that process has now been completed, clearing the way for Cabinet deliberations.

“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” he stated.

He explained that the meeting would enable Cabinet to determine government’s final position on the various recommendations submitted under the constitutional review exercise.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further noted that unlike a commission of inquiry, which requires a white paper, the constitutional review process only requires a position paper outlining government’s stance on the proposals.

He added that once approved by Cabinet, the document will be made public to allow citizens to understand government’s position on the reforms.

According to him, the next phase will involve implementation arrangements, including the establishment of an implementation committee.

He also indicated that the recommendations will not be treated uniformly, as some may be fully accepted, others modified, and some rejected based on feasibility and practicality.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that although the special Cabinet meeting will focus mainly on the constitutional review report, other national issues may also be discussed.

He assured that government will continue engaging the public after Cabinet concludes its deliberations on the proposals.
