A devastating fire has destroyed a chamber-and-hall residence at Kasoa Lamptey in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, leaving two children in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.
Eyewitnesses say the fire started after the eldest child, a female, lit a candle to study following a power disconnection by the ECG. She reportedly fell asleep, allowing the candle to ignite nearby items and spark the blaze.
The children, who were alone in the room at the time, screamed for help, prompting neighbours to break into the house and rescue them. Two of the three children were found unconscious due to severe burns and were rushed to the 37 Military Hospital.
The two female victims are said to be battling for their lives, while their male sibling is reported to be in stable condition.
The parents had reportedly travelled, leaving the children in the care of the eldest.
Although investigations are ongoing, the fire is believed to have been caused by the candle left unattended.
