C/R: Tensions Soar in Effutu as NPP, Assembly Members Clash with NDC Over Alleged Assault

Assembly members from 18 electoral areas in the Effutu Municipality have voiced their frustration and threatened to confront supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), following a recent assault and the alleged unlawful takeover of public toilets and other properties.

The uproar follows an incident reported on Monday, in which suspected NDC thugs allegedly attacked assembly members with deadly weapons while demanding keys to public toilet facilities. Several members sustained injuries during the confrontation.

At a press conference held today at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) office in Effutu, the affected assembly members, alongside NPP executives, condemned the violence and expressed disappointment in the local police, particularly the Effutu District Police Commander, for failing to take action despite numerous reports lodged.

Hon. William De-Carthia, Assembly Member for Ndaamba Electoral Area and leader of the group, criticised the police for what he described as gross inaction and negligence. He noted that repeated reports of assaults by NDC supporters had gone unaddressed, leaving assembly members vulnerable.

“In light of the police’s failure to protect us, we are left with no choice but to defend ourselves,” Hon. De-Carthia declared.

Adding to the concerns, the Communications Director for the Effutu NPP, Ellis Kwame Otabil, accused the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Rev. Atta Mensah, of ignoring calls from party executives regarding the attacks and the illegal seizure of public assets.

Otabil called on NPP supporters in the Effutu Municipality to be vigilant and prepared to defend themselves if attacks and unlawful actions by NDC supporters persist.

“We can no longer rely on the police for our safety. If these incidents continue, we will be forced to react accordingly to protect our people and our properties,” he warned.

The situation in Effutu remains tense as stakeholders call for swift intervention to prevent potential clashes and restore calm to the municipality.
