Residents and traditional leaders (Nananom) of Buduburam Maczat Down in the Gomoa East District have staged a protest, demanding the construction of a proper drainage system and motorable roads to help curb the persistent flooding in the area.
According to the residents, the lack of a proper drainage system has resulted in constant water accumulation, severe flooding, waterlogging, and damage to properties whenever it rains. They stressed that the situation has disrupted daily life, especially for schoolchildren who are often unable to attend classes due to the floodwaters.
The residents expressed deep disappointment in their Member of Parliament, Hon. Desmond Degraft Paitoo, accusing him of showing a lack of concern for their plight. They described his attitude as a “don’t care” lifestyle and criticised him for failing to fulfil promises he made during his campaign.
Speaking to the media, some residents warned the MP not to set foot in the community again if he fails to honour his commitment to construct the drainage system.
Meanwhile, the Zongo Chief of the area, Saliki Ibrahim Alhassan, revealed that although the assembly recently dredged the gutters, they left heaps of sand by the roadside, which worsens the flooding whenever it rains.
He also expressed disappointment in the MP for turning a deaf ear to their repeated calls, despite earlier promises to improve drainage infrastructure in the community.
