The proprietor of Uncle Rich Preparatory School, Rev. Ekow Richardson, has expressed deep sorrow and frustration over the tragic loss of three school children who died following a road accident at Winneba Junction in the Central Region.
He has attributed their deaths to the absence of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and specialist doctors at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.
The accident, which occurred earlier this week, claimed the lives of three pupils and left four others injured. The victims were rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital for emergency treatment. However, according to Rev. Richardson, the hospital’s limited capacity to handle critical cases contributed significantly to the loss of lives.
Speaking in an interview with Oyerepa News, Rev. Richardson lamented that the hospital, despite its status as a trauma centre, lacks both an ICU and the required specialist doctors needed to handle emergencies such as accidents.
“These children could have survived if the hospital had an Intensive Care Unit and the necessary specialists. It is very painful to lose these innocent lives because of something that could have been prevented,” he said.
Rev. Richardson is calling on the government and the Minister of Health to urgently intervene and equip the hospital with a functioning ICU and specialist medical personnel. He stressed that the absence of such critical facilities is endangering the lives of accident victims and other emergency patients in the region.
“We are pleading with the authorities to act quickly. The lives of our children and the people of this region depend on it,” he added.
The call comes amid growing concerns over the state of healthcare infrastructure in many parts of Ghana, particularly in trauma centres expected to respond to life-threatening emergencies. As the community mourns the tragic loss, many are echoing Rev. Richardson’s call for urgent investment in health facilities to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
