The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially recognized the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective today, Wednesday, January 29.
This marks a significant shift in the region’s dynamics, as these three countries have played key roles in ECOWAS’ integration efforts.
In a press statement, ECOWAS emphasized its commitment to regional unity and outlined steps to ensure minimal disruption for citizens and businesses during this transition period.
The organization reaffirmed that it remains open to future collaboration with the countries that have left the bloc.
To maintain stability, ECOWAS has issued guidance to member states and relevant authorities, advising them to implement measures that will reduce potential disruptions.
This includes continuing to recognize passports and identity cards with the ECOWAS logo issued to citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.
Additionally, goods and services from these countries will still benefit from the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and related investment policies, ensuring trade flows are not interrupted.
Citizens of the three countries will also retain their rights to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within the ECOWAS region, in accordance with the organization’s existing protocols.
These transitional measures will remain in place until ECOWAS’ Heads of State and Government establish a comprehensive framework for future relations with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
