The Builsa North Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), formed and inaugurated the Municipal Road Safety Committee on Friday, June 28, 2024, to address the high rate of road accidents and other road safety challenges in the Municipality.
The Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Mr. John Quashie, stated during his presentation at the Municipal Assembly Hall that the purpose of the Municipal Road Safety Committee (MRSC) was to enhance local capacity for road safety throughout the Municipality, encouraging participation, motivation, and prompt resolution of road safety issues.
He urged the Committee to ensure that they carry out their mandate for the benefit of the residents of Builsa North Municipality and beyond.
Mr. Quashie emphasized the alarming rate of deaths due to road traffic accidents in the Region, which led to the establishment of Road Safety offices at the district level to help address road safety challenges.
He mentioned that provisional data from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service showed that 32 people lost their lives in road crashes, with 37 injuries recorded within the first six months of 2024.
He stressed the need for urgent and practical measures to reduce deaths and injuries on the roads in the Region.
Mr. Quashie assured the committee members that his organization would serve as their secretariat and provide full support to help them succeed in their efforts.
The committee, chaired by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Vida Anaab, includes members from the Municipal Assembly, Transport Unions, Ghana Police Service, The Media, Traditional Councils, District Health Service, and others.
