A 16-year-old hairdresser, Rebecca Nyomi, has been arrested for setting her boyfriend’s room on fire after he ended their relationship. The incident occurred at New Nkusukum, a suburb of Mankessim in the Central Region’s Mfantseman Municipality.
According to eyewitnesses, Rebecca went to her boyfriend Samuel Agbobli’s workplace, a cornmill shop, and demanded money. However, Samuel told her he had ended their relationship due to her infidelity. Rebecca begged for forgiveness, but Samuel refused and dragged her out of his workplace.
In a fit of anger, Rebecca went to Samuel’s room, which she had a spare key for, and set it ablaze. She then locked the doors and windows and returned to her workplace. Samuel was alerted to the fire and rushed home, but everything was destroyed.
An eyewitness reported that Rebecca had come to her and complained about the breakup and Samuel’s refusal to give her money. The eyewitness and other residents helped put out the fire.
Rebecca confessed to setting the room on fire and appealed for forgiveness, stating that she had contributed to the purchase of some of the items in the room. Samuel confirmed the breakup but expressed shock that Rebecca would resort to arson.
The Assembly Member for New Nkusukum, Hon. Alhaji Alli Amoah Abubakuri, condemned the act and advised teenagers in relationships to avoid such destructive behavior. Rebecca is currently assisting police investigations at the Mankessim Police Station after being brought in by community members.
