The Ghana Police Service has recovered five firearms after a gun battle with suspected armed robbers in the Bono Region.
Addressing a press briefing in Sunyani, Bono Regional Police Commander, Joshua Coppson, described the operation as a major breakthrough in efforts to combat armed robbery and organised crime in the region.
According to DCOP Coppson, intelligence received on February 11, 2026, suggested that a robbery gang was planning to attack traders along the Dormaa–Gonokrom highway. In response, surveillance teams were deployed to the area to prevent the planned assault.
He explained that in the early hours of February 12, officers advancing toward a parked motorbike in the vicinity came under gunfire from nearby bushes. The police returned fire, and a search at daybreak led to the discovery of a male suspect who had sustained gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, with an AK-47 rifle found beside him.
A further search of the area uncovered a sack containing additional weapons and ammunition. The items retrieved included two Baikal single-barrel guns, a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of 9mm ammunition and 34 additional rounds, an AK-47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds and 10 extra rounds, as well as 39 BB cartridges.
Other items recovered were a dagger, a mobile phone, a Honda motorbike, a black mask and a set of talismans.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command has assured the public that operations are ongoing to track down and arrest other members of the gang. It also appealed to residents to provide credible information to assist in the fight against crime and enhance security in the region.
