A financial analyst, Clement Opoku-Kyeremanteng has said, Ghanaians should blame government for the recent hikes in farming inputs such as fertilizers.
His comment is in relation to concerns of farmers in the country that, prices of fertilizers have overly been increased making it difficult for them to purchase and apply on their farms.
Speaking on why prices of agric products have been increased on Oyerepa Breakfast Time hosted by Akua Asieduwaa, Mr. Clement said the state does not involve the required technocrats in policy formulation that aims at improving agriculture in Ghana.
According to him, the government pays little attention to the Agric business. A lot of agric inputs could have been manufactured in Ghana but since the government doesn’t pay attention to agriculture, farmers tend to buy imported products which are highly expensive.
He added that the central government does not ensure that the financial sectors make the right decisions like disbursement of loans to farmers, distribution of farming machinery or inputs to farmers for the development of the agricultural sector.
He said another challenge in the Agric business is the government’s incapability to supervise the financial sectors that are authorized to ensure the welfare of farmers.
Clement Opoku-Kyeremanteng stated that the country’s agric sector could see massive progress if only the government focused much on its attention on farming.
He said agriculture will see the green light should the government begin to make the sector lucrative, thus by giving farmers incentives, loans, and farming equipment among others.
As per him, the government should hold the financial institutions responsible for agriculture accountable for the current state of the farming system in Ghana.
