The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled a new digital initiative for the transport sector on Monday, February 19, 2024, in Accra.

Dubbed “Tap n Go”, this innovative digital card comes preloaded with cash and can be used to pay for transport fares by simply tapping the card on a fixed machine on the bus, similar to the Oyster Card in the United Kingdom.

Ghana’s Tap and Go card will offer both physical and virtual versions to ensure convenience for users. The virtual card option allows users to download the Tap and Go app on their mobile phones, enabling them to make payments through their phones if they prefer not to use the physical card.

During the official launch of Tap n Go, the Vice President emphasized that the card will significantly boost revenue generation for metro mass transit annually. He highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a unified platform for the entire transport sector in the country, with the Tap n Go card expected to address many challenges within the system.

State-owned transport services like Metro Mass Transit and STC are set to adopt the Tap and Go system, which will also be available to private transport owners.

Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, the Minister of Transport, announced that the Tap and Go digital initiative is set to revolutionize the informal transport sector by implementing a well-structured and thoroughly tested technology. This initiative will bring immense benefits to drivers, transport owners, and the general public.

In addition, Ghana’s Tap and Go card will offer both physical and virtual versions, ensuring convenience and ease of use for all users.

Albert Adu Boahen, the Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Limited, emphasized that the Tap and Go system will eliminate the long queues that manual ticketing creates at various bus terminals. He urged the public to embrace the Tap and Go app to enhance the efficiency of Metro Mass Transit Limited’s services. Boahen highlighted that the manual ticketing system leads to revenue loss, which ultimately hinders the organization’s operations.
