Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged President John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his commitment to governing for all Ghanaians by reversing recent dismissals of public sector employees.
The Mahama administration, acting on a directive from Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, has revoked the employment of numerous individuals appointed under the previous government.
This move has sparked widespread criticism, with Dr. Bawumia adding his voice to calls for the dismissals to be halted and affected workers to be safeguarded.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday night, Dr. Bawumia stated that while he had initially intended to give the new administration time to settle and focus on national development, he could not ignore the violation of the rights of legitimately employed citizens.
“To look away whilst these ills persist is to abandon my responsibility to remind President Mahama and his government of the overriding duty to live by the democratic tenets envisioned in the 1992 Constitution and do justice and right to all manner of persons,” he asserted.
He accused the Mahama administration of unfairly targeting employees from the previous government, calling it ironic that a party that campaigned on job creation was now making people unemployed.
“The least a party that campaigned on jobs could do under conditions of unemployment is to also innovate and create jobs rather than dismiss people,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to uphold democratic principles by protecting all citizens and reversing the dismissals.
“I call on His Excellency President Mahama to be a president for all Ghanaians by putting a stop to these developments, reversing the unfair dismissals, and protecting all our citizens.”
“We must advance our democracy. We must protect our state institutions. We must uphold our Constitution. Ghana can do better. Ghana must do better.”
Additionally, Dr. Bawumia raised concerns over the increasing violent attacks on individuals and state institutions by organized groups, warning of the dangers such actions pose to national stability.
