The Ayanfuri community in the Upper Denkyira West District has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Okyere.
The chief reportedly lost his life after accidentally shooting himself during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to reports, Nana Kwabena Okyere was performing traditional dances at the funeral grounds while holding a pump-action gun when the firearm accidentally discharged, causing a severe gunshot wound.
He was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital mortuary for preservation pending further investigations.
The tragic incident has shocked residents and traditional leaders in the area, with many expressing sorrow over the sudden passing of the chief.
Police have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Assembly Member for the area, Castro Kwabena Ennin, who confirmed the incident, described the development as heartbreaking for the people of Ayanfuri.
