President John Dramani Mahama has made key interim ministerial appointments in the wake of the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two prominent members of his cabinet.
The President has appointed Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to serve concurrently as the Acting Minister of Defence. This follows the death of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the substantive Minister of Defence, in the military helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
In a similar move, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Kofi Armah Buah, has been tasked with the additional portfolio of Acting Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, a position left vacant after the passing of Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in the same tragic incident.
The temporary assignments are part of efforts to ensure continuity in government operations while the nation mourns the fallen leaders.
A formal announcement from the Presidency emphasized the need for stability and decisive leadership during this difficult period.
Both Dr. Boamah and Dr. Mohammed were aboard a Ghana Air Force Z-9 helicopter that crashed near Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region. The accident also claimed the lives of several other high-profile individuals and military personnel.
President Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, during which flags are to fly at half-mast in honour of the victims.
