The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has successfully disrupted a planned armed robbery along the Antoakrom–Manso Nkwanta road, leading to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and a vehicle believed to have been used in previous criminal operations.
Police said intelligence gathered on December 31, 2025, revealed that a group of armed robbers had taken cover in a bush along the stretch and were preparing to attack unsuspecting commuters. Acting swiftly on the information, a police team was deployed to the area.
Upon arrival, officers encountered four armed suspects, who allegedly opened fire while attempting to flee. The police returned fire, resulting in a gun battle.
Two of the suspects, identified as Usmaro Mohammed and Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Yaw, sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The other two suspects managed to escape into the bush.
Items retrieved from the scene included an AK-47 rifle loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, a pump-action gun with four BB cartridges, four spent cartridges, a black bag containing 16 live cartridges, and a Toyota Voxy vehicle suspected to have been used in several robbery attacks.
Police believe the suspects are connected to a number of criminal activities, including armed robberies in Manso and Obuasi, the Mpohor gold robbery, the Nyinahini highway robbery, and a cocoa shed robbery at Sefwi.
Investigations are ongoing to track down the escaped suspects and other accomplices believed to be hiding in Mankranso, Tamale, and Brekum. Police are also working to establish the ownership of the impounded vehicle as part of efforts to dismantle the criminal network.
