The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) embarks on crackdown on pavement and roadside vendors in a bid to ease congestion and ensure smooth passage for pedestrians and vehicles, following the launch of a three-day decongestion exercise on Tuesday, May 20.
According to Oyerepa TV reporter Bernard K Dadzie, who visited various streets in Accra, the roadside and pavement areas are now clear of selling activities.
However, the traders are expressing feelings of betrayal, claiming that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised to allow them to sell on roadside during the 2024 election campaign.
The traders allege that NDC Chairman, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, made these promises, but now that they have voted for the party, they are being evicted.
Some traders also alleged that the AMA boss had assured them that a designated place would be provided for them to sell, but this promise was not fulfilled. The traders are now facing the harsh reality of losing their livelihoods.
The traders are worried about their future, as they rely on street trading for their livelihood. They are demanding that the government provides them with alternative solutions and designated market spaces.
