Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai- CEO of Breast Care International
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Breast Care International, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai has expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of funding for the treatment and research into breast cancer in the country.
According to her, there is no special fund allocated for cancer treatment, the situation she claims is inappropriate which needs immediate attention.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Oyerepa TV’s how; ‘My signature’, Dr Beatrice Wiafe revealed that hospitals in the country that are noted for the treatment of cancer have been dependent on foreign donors for all their research works on the disease.
“ We have been dependent on foreign donors for all our research works on health-related diseases….What is the country doing to empower its own local research works aside from what we got from the donor agencies?” she quizzed.
She disclosed further that the dissolved cancer board operated without a budget. Consequently, it would be good for the government of Ghana to be committed to the fight against cancer.
The Breast Care International CEO however proposed a National Cancer Registry to overseer the treatment of cancer-related issues in the country.
She affirmed there is no cohesion between the Okomfo Anokye and Korlebu Teaching hospitals when it comes to the treatment of cancer.
For this reason, the government via the Ministry of Health and finance should allocate funds for the battle against cancer.
Again, the government should liaise with the two teaching hospitals in the country to combat the canker.
