A suspected armed robbery operation targeting a filling station near Agbogbloshie in Accra was foiled after police intercepted four men allegedly preparing to carry out the attack, resulting in a gun battle that left one suspect dead.

The incident occurred at Galoway on Thursday, September 10, after the Accra Regional Police Command received intelligence that four armed men travelling on two motorbikes were heading towards a Shell filling station in the area.

Acting on the information, personnel from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, supported by the Operational Unit, moved to intercept the suspects.

The police team reportedly encountered the men at the Galoway Police Barrier, where a gunfight ensued.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the suspects was shot and injured, while the other three abandoned their motorbikes and escaped from the scene.

Police subsequently recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, serial number 79-HF-3014, from the injured suspect. The weapon was fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of ammunition.

An additional 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition were also recovered from the suspect, bringing the total ammunition recovered during the operation to 186 rounds.

The injured suspect was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body has since been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary pending identification and autopsy.

Two unregistered motorbikes, identified as a Royal and an Apsonic, were also retrieved from the scene and have been retained by the police as exhibits, together with the firearm and ammunition.

The Accra Regional Police Command said investigations were continuing to identify and arrest the three suspects who fled the scene and establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged robbery plot.

The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led operations aimed at preventing armed robbery and other violent crimes in the region.
