A task force from the National Association of Small Scale Miners on Wednesday, September 11, conducted a significant operation along the River Mankran in the Ahafo Ano South West District, targeting illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
During the raid, the task force seized various equipment used by the illegal miners.
However, upon spotting the task force, the miners fled the scene, leaving behind their machinery and tools along the riverbank.
With no suspects to apprehend, the task force proceeded to destroy the abandoned mining equipment.
Dredging machines found on the river were set on fire, while other items such as water pumps, motors, and tanks were confiscated as evidence.
A spokesperson for the Small Scale Miners Association emphasized the task force’s commitment to intensifying efforts to eradicate galamsey, particularly in areas where river bodies are being harmed.
The Association stressed its zero-tolerance policy toward illegal mining activities that cause environmental destruction.
The Association reaffirmed its dedication to protecting Ghana’s natural resources and vowed to continue the fight against illegal mining to safeguard the environment for future generations.
