Ghana’s Minister of Energy, John Jinapor, has emphasized the need for Africa to invest $55 billion in the energy sector to achieve sustainable growth.
This significant investment is required to address the continent’s energy challenges, including the fact that some African countries have as little as 11% of their population with access to electricity.
The disparity in electricity consumption is striking, with Africa accounting for only 1.5% of global electricity consumption, compared to the United States’ 21.
5% and Europe’s 24.1%. Furthermore, approximately 600 million people in Africa lack access to electricity, underscoring the urgency of addressing this energy deficit.
Jinapor’s remarks were made at the Africa Prosperity Dialogue series, where he highlighted the importance of investing in renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and mini-hydro power, to drive sustainable growth and reduce the continent’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
