Some traders at the Makola Market have staged a protest against the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) over eviction attempts, destroying construction fencing at the site of a new market project due to concerns over the lack of alternative trading spaces.

The traders, mainly women at the 31st December Makola Market, were captured in a video pulling down parts of the fencing erected for the new market development. In the footage, they are seen chanting and protesting, with many dressed in red attire.

“We are very angry. We don’t have anywhere to go,” some of the traders were heard saying.

According to the traders, the Accra Mayor intends to evict them to make way for the construction of the new market, but they claim no proper relocation arrangements have been communicated to them. They argue that the move threatens their livelihoods and daily survival.

The situation has heightened tensions at the market as traders demand clear relocation plans before any eviction is carried out.
