Nine individuals, including one woman, have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for their alleged involvement in the recent riots in Nkwanta, located in the Oti Region.
The accused—Evans Mawugbe, Donkor Ebenezer, Solomon Amenu, Robert Dzanka, Kenyenso Senyo, Edwin Yeboah, Yudah Adule, Keteke Joshua, and Grace Ordzi—are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit crime, causing harm, rioting, and rioting with weapons.
Presiding judge Isaac Addo remanded all nine into lawful custody. Their pleas were not taken, and they are expected to reappear in court on July 21, 2025.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong, who is leading the prosecution, investigations are still ongoing.
The prosecution told the court that the accused, all residents of Nkwanta, were arrested during a joint operation involving the Police, Military, and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The operation was carried out to enforce a curfew imposed on the township in the wake of rising tensions.
On June 26, 2025, the suspects allegedly attempted to perform rituals at the Yam Market, triggering public disturbances and extensive property damage.
Gunshots were reportedly fired during the unrest, resulting in injuries to several residents. The injured victims include Emmanuel Popolampo, Azumah Angela, Akwasi aka Commando, and Ruth.
The prosecution also revealed that an unidentified male victim who sustained gunshot wounds died after being rushed to the hospital.
The joint security task force managed to arrest the nine suspects, while others believed to be involved remain at large. Investigations are continuing.
