Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the unresolved Ablekuma North parliamentary election results.
He has urged the New Patriotic Party, claiming victory, to respect due process and wait for the Electoral Commission’s (EC) official declaration.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time hosted by Akua Asieduwaa, Prof. Marfo criticised the premature declarations of victory by both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), cautioning that such actions could undermine public trust in the EC and the electoral process.
“As the NPP claims to have won the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat, what if the recount is done and they end up losing? Will they then say they’ve been cheated?”
“Go to the EC for the declaration if you (NPP) think you’ve won. They are getting ahead of themselves,” he said.
Prof Marfo’s comments come in the wake of a dramatic protest on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, when the Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a walkout and marched to the CID headquarters.
The protest was in response to what they described as the Electoral Commission’s unjustified delay in declaring the 2024 parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North constituency.
Ablekuma North remains the only constituency in the country with parliamentary results from the 2024 elections yet to be officially announced. The delay stems from ongoing disputes over results from three polling stations, which are still pending collation.
Both the NPP and the NDC have claimed victory in the constituency, further intensifying political tensions. Prof. Marfo expressed concern that this combative posture from both parties could be contributing to the EC’s hesitation.
“I think that kind of mentality—rushing to claim victory without waiting for the process to be completed—is why the Electoral Commission is reluctant to declare the results,” he explained.
