President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong optimism that Ghana will soon elect its first female President, highlighting the nation’s continued progress in advancing women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing, China, on Monday, October 13, 2025, President Mahama said Ghana has made significant strides in integrating gender perspectives into national development policies and governance.
“As the African Union Champion for Gender and Women’s Empowerment, I am proud to say that Ghana remains steadfast in its pursuit of equality for all,” he stated.
He cited Ghana’s historic milestones in women’s leadership, including the election of the country’s first female Vice President and the appointment of women to key roles in government, the judiciary, the security services, and other major institutions.
“These are not symbolic gestures; they are deliberate affirmations that women deserve a seat at the highest levels of decision-making,” Mahama emphasized. “And I am confident that, in the near future, a woman will become President of the Republic of Ghana.”
The President also lauded Ghana’s achievements in education, noting that the country has reached gender parity in school enrollment, with more girls gaining access to and completing education than ever before.
He further highlighted reforms aimed at strengthening institutions that protect women and girls, such as the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, the Domestic Violence Secretariat, and the Specialised Domestic Violence Courts.
According to him, increased budgetary support has enabled these agencies to provide justice, protection, and social services for survivors of gender-based violence.
President Mahama concluded by urging governments and global partners to take transformative action toward achieving genuine gender equality, stressing that empowering women is essential for inclusive and sustainable development.
