Residents of Kyekyewere in the Atwima Mpoonua District of Ashanti have embarked on a peaceful protest to express their displeasure over the deplorable state of roads in the community.
According to them the major road that links the community and Nyinahin, the capital of Atwima Mpoonua District is extremely bad and is undoubtedly affecting their lives.
Speaking to the press during the protest, the residents expressed that, a couple of pregnant women have died as a result of the road, stating that since vehicles do not ply the road, whenever they’re in labour they resort to motorbikes to convey them to Nyinahin government hospital. And because the route is deplorable, some end up delivering on their way, others who face severe complications eventually perish. Sick people they disclosed also die because of the lack of a health facility and the bad state of the Anyinahin-Kyekyewere route.
“We’re dying because of our poor road, we’ve experienced several accidents on this bad road, and we’ve had a series of maternal and child deaths due to the terrible state of our road. We belong to the NPP but if Akufo-Addo and our MP, Isaac Asiamah don’t fix our roads, we won’t vote in 2024. We’ll not allow politicians to stage any campaign, we’ll prevent EC from conducting elections here.” Women of the Kyekyewere lamented.
The Kyekyewere chief, Nana Kwabena Nketia Marfo also expressed that, the Nyinahin bauxite is on his land and therefore was expecting that, the government would have used part of the Sinohydro money to fix the 15 kilometres death trap road that has been in existence for over 3 hundred years. He does not understand why the money was used to construct the Tamale interchange whilst the route to the bauxite has not been fixed.
Nana Nketia Marfo however appealed to President Nana Addo to make it a responsibility to use part of the Sinohydro money to construct the Kyekyewere- Nyinahin route for the betterment of their lives.
On the hand other hand, the assembly Member of the area, Anane Frimpong disclosed that several appeals to the government via the Atwima Mpoonua District Assembly to construct the route have been made, yet all have proven futile.
He disclosed that the Kyekyewere community lacks social amenities such as electricity, a communication network, a health facility, and potable water. Even school buildings in the community are weak and have turned into a death trap that needs immediate attention.
