Speed ramps are built to limit top speeds on highways.
However, there is a growing tendency for communities to build speed ramps without consulting the authorities in a number of localities across the nation.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union, (GPRTU) Alhaji Smaila Boakye, is worried over the numerous and large illegal speed ramps on highways across the country.
Speaking at a training for drivers that was organized by KMA and its development partners as part of the annual Road Safety Week celebration, the chairman lamented that due to the many speed ramps, drivers spend longer time on the road, which causes a lot of damage to their vehicles.
“The Roads and Highways Minister, Amoako Attah, promised to remove all the illegal speed ramps on highways, but we have not seen anything yet.
We are pleading with the road minister to remove the ramps. Drivers are now using extra gallons of fuel due to the speed ramps, and they spend more time on the road. A journey that should take you 4 hours now takes 6 hours. As much as we are using ramps to reduce car crushes, they can also cause accidents.”
He suggested every community should have one three-speed ramp. And the height of the ramps must also be taken into consideration.
