Wa: Day-old baby boy rescued after being abandoned in Sombo bush

A day-old baby boy has been rescued after being found abandoned in a bush at Sombo, a suburb of the Wa Municipality in Ghana’s Upper West Region.

Community members discovered the infant at about 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, and rushed him to the Sombo Health Centre, where nurses are providing medical care.

The area’s Assembly Member, Seidu Abubakari, said he received a distress call from residents and immediately went to the scene. He contacted the police upon arrival, prompting an investigation into the incident.

The circumstances surrounding the abandonment remain unclear, and the identity of the person responsible has not been established. The Upper West Police Command has yet to issue a report on the incident.

Mr. Abubakari described the incident as disturbing and said it was the first of its kind in the community. He assured residents that steps were being taken to support the police investigation and establish what happened.

Residents remain in shock and are appealing to the authorities to intensify efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Mr. Abubakari also called for appropriate action and appealed to anyone with information to assist the police with their investigation.
