Court to rule on Wontumi’s bail application on November 4

The Accra High Court has scheduled November 4, 2026, to deliver its ruling on a bail application filed by former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The application seeks his release from custody pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction and 20-year prison sentence for illegal mining-related offences involving a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.

Mr Boasiako’s legal team is asking the court to grant him bail while the appeal process continues.

The application was initially scheduled for hearing on August 19 but was adjourned after Mr Boasiako and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, failed to appear in court. The hearing was subsequently rescheduled to October 15.

The Attorney-General is opposing the application, citing concerns that the former NPP regional chairman could abscond if granted bail.

The court is expected to consider the arguments presented by both parties before deciding whether Mr Boasiako should be released on bail pending the outcome of his appeal.

The ruling, scheduled for November 4, will determine whether he can secure temporary release from custody while challenging his conviction and sentence.
