Ghana Records 3,876 Cyber Incidents In 7 Months; Online Fraud Accounts For 47% – Deputy Minister

Ghana recorded 3,876 cybersecurity incidents between January and July this year, with online fraud making up 47% of the cases.

Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, disclosed this at the launch of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2026 in Accra.

Speaking on behalf of sector Minister Samuel Nartey George, at official launch of national Cyber security Awareness month 2026 in Accra, he said the statistics from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) highlight the need for prevention, timely reporting and effective response to protect individuals, businesses and institutions.

He noted that while mobile money, digital banking, fintech and online government services have expanded access, the progress can only be sustained if systems are secure and trustworthy for citizens and non-citizens.

The theme for this year’s celebration focuses on protecting digital financial services, preventing online fraud, promoting responsible digital behaviour and strengthening cooperation among players in the digital economy.

Mr. Sukparu said Ghana has a strong legal framework with the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), which protects critical information infrastructure and supports national coordination.

The CSA coordinates the national Computer Emergency Response Team, while financial, telecom and government sectors have their sectoral response teams managed by their regulators. “Effectiveness depends on coordination among regulators, operators and public institutions,” he said.

He said cyber resilience is about prevention and how quickly institutions can detect, contain, protect customers and restore services after an attack.

“For financial institutions, a disruption can affect customers’ funds, livelihoods and confidence in digital transactions,” he stated.

He stressed that no institution can fight cybercrime alone and called on banks, telcos, fintechs, regulators and law enforcement to share threat information promptly to prevent wider losses.
