North Industrial Area fire leaves two feared dead
Two people are feared dead following a fire outbreak at the North Industrial Area branch of Duraplast Ghana in Accra in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026.
One of the victims is reportedly a two-week-old baby, although authorities had not officially confirmed the identities of the victims or the reported deaths at the time of filing.
The fire, which sent thick smoke across the industrial enclave, reportedly spread rapidly after breaking out at the facility, raising concern among workers, residents and others in the area.
An eyewitness, identified as Mohammed, said the fire may have been triggered by an exploding gas cylinder.
According to him, a woman had been cooking for her children before leaving the gas cylinder in the care of one of them.
He alleged that the child increased the gas flow, resulting in an explosion that sparked the fire.
“Some woman was cooking for her children and she went out and one of the children increased it and then the cylinder exploded,” he said.
The blaze subsequently intensified, with thick smoke reportedly engulfing parts of the surrounding area.
While the reported cause points to a possible gas-cylinder explosion, the circumstances leading to the fire have not been officially established.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire, verify the reported fatalities and establish the extent of damage caused by the blaze.
